Implant-Supported Dentures

In the past, losing all your natural teeth often meant a lifetime of struggling with loose and uncomfortable dentures. Thankfully, the introduction of implant-supported dentures has allowed edentulous patients to rediscover all the benefits of having teeth that are stable and strong. Our principal dentist Dr. Mounir Iskandar has advanced training and extensive experience in planning and fitting implant-supported dentures and an initial consultation will help you discover all the options available to you.

What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?

An implant-supported denture is constructed in a similar way to a traditional denture, using replacement teeth that are attached to a gum colored acrylic base. However, instead of resting uncomfortably on the gums, an implant-supported denture has special attachments on its fitting surface. These will clip onto special attachments fitted to the dental implants that will have been surgically inserted into your jawbone. Instead of having a denture that can move around whenever you eat or talk, or even when you laugh or yawn, you will be able to enjoy having a denture that is firmly held in place, but which can still be removed for easy cleaning.implant supported dentures

What Are the Main Benefits of Choosing
Implant-Supported Dentures?

There are a number of benefits in choosing this treatment. It will provide you with teeth that are far more stable and much stronger in comparison with a conventional denture. With an implant-supported denture, you should be able to enjoy a far greater range of foods. This could allow you to benefit from improved nutrition, which in turn could even help protect your general health.

  • Preventing Further Jawbone Loss
Using dental implants helps to halt bone loss, restoring stimulation to the jawbone so that old bone cells are continually replaced. Conventional dentures that rest directly on the gums can often accelerate bone loss due to the pressure on the gum tissue and the bone. Your denture will be supported by dental implants rather than your gums, so it should be much more comfortable, eliminating any sore spots that may have been caused by your dentures rubbing on your gums.
  • Less Bulky Denture Design
As your denture will no longer rely on retention for support, it can be designed to be smaller and more comfortable. If you choose to have an upper implant-supported denture then it should feel much less bulky than a traditional denture. This is because the denture can be designed in a horseshoe shape, just like a lower denture and uncovering your upper palate. You will find food is much tastier as your upper palate has many taste buds so mealtimes will become more enjoyable.
  • Restoring Your Facial Features
Dr. Iskandar designs every implant-supported denture extremely carefully, ensuring it provides just the right amount of support for the muscles in your cheeks and lips. He will also make sure it restores the proper dimensions between your upper and lower jaw. By properly supporting your facial features, we can help to create a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance, particularly if you have struggled with loose and broken down dentures or tooth loss for many years beforehand.
Am I a Candidate for an
Implant-Supported Denture?

Dr. Iskandar will evaluate your suitability during your initial consultation with us here at Radiance Dentistry. Digital dental x-rays and a cone beam CT scan will determine if you have sufficient bone to support your dental implants. As relatively few dental implants are required for this treatment, bone grafting is often unnecessary even when jawbone loss has occurred.
