One of the requirements for dental implants is the presence of bone in which to place the implants, so when there is not enough bone, it needs to be created in order for the implants to be placed. The Maxillary sinuses are air-filled cavities located in the back section of our upper jaw, where we have the upper molars. So, when we lose our upper molars, it is very common to have what is called an enlarged sinus.
How does that affect the bone? Because the sinus is trying to use any empty space due to the air pressure when you breathe, like a balloon getting inflated this leads to shrinking of the bone in that area and the sinus now occupies the space where the bone used to be.The quantity of bone in the area becomes much less and there won’t be enough bone to place the implants. That’s why when you want to get dental implants in that area the lack of bone is a very common situation and it requires a Sinus procedure.
WHEN WOULD WE SUGGEST A SINUS LIFT?
Using The Planmeca ProFace CBCT Imaging device we are able to determine the amount of bone loss you have.If the tooth have been extracted a while ago or the gums health was not good we find that whatever bone is left is in very poor condition and the sinus had widespread into the space. In these cases, we will most likely suggest a sinus lift. Using specific techniques, we lift the sinus membrane and the space will be filled with a bone graft, that procedure is called a sinus lift.
WHY IS A BONE GRAFT NEEDED FOR IMPLANTS?
Before receiving a dental implant, dentists typically perform bone grafts. There is a multitude of reasons why someone may need a bone graft procedure, including:
- Untreated periodontal disease
- Developmental or genetic defects
- Deteriorated bone mass from earlier tooth loss
- A socked infection due to a recent lost tooth
- Physical injury to the jaw from falls, accidents, automobile collisions, or contact sports
- The wearing of conventional dentures has worn down your jawbone
To ensure that the jawbone is strong enough to withhold an implant, a dental graph must be done. A bone graft can take anywhere from 3-6 months to heal fully and is able to integrate with existing bone to help grow new natural bone.
