Dental implants are a great treatment option for missing teeth, and we find that prospective patients can make better choices about the procedure when the know what to expect from the treatment process. With that in mind, we want to look at the temporary side effects of undergoing dental implant surgery.
PAIN AND DISCOMFORT
Pain and discomfort are a given when it comes to surgical recovery. Thankfully the soreness that’s experienced is not too serious and it can be addressed through the use of recommended pain relievers. Be sure to follow dosage instructions carefully. Resting early on will also help keep reduce the duration of pain and discomfort.
BLEEDING AROUND THE DENTAL IMPLANT SITE
A little bit of bleeding is not uncommon after you get your dental implants placed. This will often abate after 48 hours. Having gauze in place on the incision sites is quite helpful with this side effect. If bleeding is heavy or persists for more than two days, be sure to contact the practice so the matter can be addressed.
BRUISING AND SWELLING
Bruising and swelling around part of your face is a common side effect following any sort of oral surgery. The bruising may also cause discoloration of the gums.
The bruising you experience will subside as you heal, typically only lasting a few days after your oral surgery. Swelling will also subside with time, with major swelling only lasting a few days but minor swelling persisting for up to a few weeks. The use of an ice pack can be helpful to manage the swelling.
EATING AND DRINKING AFTER ORAL SURGERY
After undergoing oral surgery for dental implants, you will usually be told to stick to a diet of soft foods that are not spicy and lukewarm in temperature. This helps avoid pain or sensitivity when biting or chewing. You’ll want to avoid chewing anything with the part of your mouth that’s been worked on until more substantive healing has progressed.
It’s important that you avoid the use of drinking straws after your oral surgery until you are advised otherwise. The suction created by the use of a straw can affect the blood clots and sutures in a negative way.
ATTEND ALL FOLLOW-UP VISITS
Follow-up care is an important part of healing properly and avoiding complications. Be sure to attend all follow-up visits at the practice as scheduled, and to reach out to the practice between these visits should any questions or concerns arise.
